Magnolia grandiflora is an evergreen tree, dense and widely conical, with narrowly elliptical to ovate, leathery and shiny leaves, dark green above and lighter and hairy below, up to 20cm long. From late summer to autumn, it produces large, creamy white, cup-shaped flowers, up to 25cm wide, with 9-12 tepals. The genus is named after Pierre Magnol, director of the Botanical Garden of Montpellier. Native to the Atlantic regions of the United States and the Gulf of Mexico, it is prized for its large flowers and decorative leaves. Evergreen tree, dense, widely conical, with leaves ranging from strictly elliptical to widely ovate, leathery, shiny, dark green, up to 20cm long with a lighter green lower surface and often covered with rusty down. From late summer to autumn, it produces large creamy white cupped flowers, up to 25cm wide, with 9-12 tepals. The genus is named after Pierre Magnol (1638-1715), director of the Botanical Garden of Montpellier. The species is native to the Atlantic regions of the United States and the Gulf of Mexico, where it lives spontaneously in the humid plains. It was introduced into our continent at the beginning of the 18th century, spreading due to the beauty of its large flowers and persistent, large and decorative leaves. From the bark, known as "Virginia quiquina", ingredients with tonic, vermifuge and anti-rheumatic properties are extracted.
