Evergreen shrub or tree, thick and bushy, with shiny, ovate or elliptical leaves, dark green in colour and up to 12cm long, with red petioles. In early summer, it blooms with white, fragrant, cupped flowers, 1.5cm wide, followed by red, cherry-like ovoid fruits, which turn black when ripe. Portuguese cherry laurel, native to the Iberian Peninsula and southwestern France, is often found as an ornamental plant in gardens and parks.
